Project Shanghai 2006 "Project Shanghai 2006" sponsored by Fenghua Chinese School, was an excellent volunteering program over the summer. For two weeks, from August 7th to 19th, eight students (seven of them from Stevenson) participated in the program to help students in China to further develop and strengthen their knowledge of the English language and American culture. The program was supervised by Ms. Jialing Yang (Vice-Principal of Fenghua Chinese School) and Ms. Sharon Peng. In the two weeks, Amy Chen (grade 9), Alex Guo (grade 11), Ben Jiao (grade 9), Jennifer Lin (grade 8), Jerry Luo (grade 10), Keli Liu (grade 10), Michelle Ran (grade 10) and Tony Zhang (grade 10) participated in teaching Chinese students age from 12-14, at XinSong Middle School and ZhuYuan Middle School in the city of Shanghai. The American students used PowerPoint presentations to present many topics, such as American school, pop culture, American holidays, movies, sports and then discussed the topics in small groups. This helped the Chinese students to learn about American culture and society as well as develop their English speaking skills. The Chinese students enjoyed the program very much and wished to continue it next year. "Project Shanghai 2006" was a huge success. While aiding Chinese students in their study of English, the American students practiced presentation and public speech skills, as well as gained more knowledge about their origins in China. They visited many famous cultural and social places in Shanghai, such as the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, Yu Garden, and Nan-Jing Road. The experience was also an opportunity to make new friends for both the American and Chinese students. Many American students continue to communicate with the Chinese students through e-mail, MSN, or QQ (a Chinese chat program). The experience of teaching others was extremely valuable and the Shanghai Project 2006 was a great achievement for the American volunteer students.
